Create a container-only garden

Whether you’re renting, don’t have the space or patience for traditional flower beds, or just like to do things differently, here are some top tips on how to curate your own stunning garden using only potted plants.

Play with height

As with any planting scheme, you create the most impact and balance when you include a variety of different heights, shapes and sizes. This applies to the planters you use, as much as your plant choices. Build depth and interest with small trees that are suitable for growing in containers, tall architectural plants, like alliums, ornamental grasses and delphiniums, and low-growing shrubs.

Underplanting trees and tall varieties with trailing plants, suited for ground cover, creates a stunning three-dimensional effect, hiding any bare spots of earth and disguising pots, creating the illusion of a planted bed.

Group together

Grouping pots together builds a cohesive planting scheme and gives the impression of an abundant flower bed. Don’t just consider the aesthetic when grouping plants together – it will make your life easier if you also group plants according to care and watering requirements. You’ll reap rewards by keeping sun-loving plants together in bright spots, whilst shade-lovers can be happily grouped together in darker corners. If there isn’t much sun to play with at all, don’t fear because there is an abundance of plants that love shade or indirect light and grow very happily in containers, including ferns, hostas, begonias, heucheras, and carex.

Go lightweight

Pick planters made from lightweight materials that can be moved easily – ideal for changing up planting schemes on an ad hoc basis, or relocating certain plants that need more sun, shade or frost protection. It also means you can take your entire garden with you when you move, meaning much-loved plants don’t need to be left behind and you can recreate your floral display in your new home. This is particularly handy for renters, who want to enjoy a beautiful garden but don’t want to invest heavily in an outdoor space that doesn’t belong to them. Despite their premium look, LECHUZA planters are made from lightweight recycled plastic* with chic finishes that mimic other materials, such as metal or natural stone.

Handy plant coasters with wheels make moving pots around even easier, particularly when they are filled with soil and plants and prove heavier. Browse LECHUZA’s range of wheeled coasters in different sizes and finishes to complement various planters.

Create a focal point

Whilst the overall planting scheme can blend together, it is always a great idea to draw the eye to a fun focal point that will work to really anchor a space. Make a statement with one or two stand-out pots and plants, such as a hydrangea, rose or acer. The CANTO – winner of numerous design awards – in a SLATESTONE FINISH, as a low 11L planter makes a striking home for any showstopping shrub, whilst the elegant CUBICO Color (RRP: £37.99 for a 41cm pot)  or the impressive PALO Natural Wood column planter with its stunning solid Eucalyptus finish (RRP: £226.99) are both ideal for taller plants.

Help them thrive

Keep your container plants looking their best with LECHUZA-PON, a 100% peat-free potting mix enriched with a long-term fertiliser and natural nutrients that can feed your plants for up to 8 months (RRP: £15.29 for 6L). The mix is ideal for all plants, with good drainage capability to prevent waterlogging and provide perfect aeration for roots. Its mineral base also inhibits mould growth and doesn’t welcome pests, keeping your plants healthier for longer.

In addition, the innovative self-watering feature on all Lechuza pots can help you water efficiently, ensuring plants receive the optimum level of moisture at all times, going up to 12 weeks in between watering when the built-in reservoir has been filled.
