The secret to sustainable container gardening:

Do you want to become a more eco-conscious container gardener? Perhaps you’re already on the journey, but are curious to know if there’s anything you can be doing differently or better? Keep reading to discover some practical eco-conscious tips you can easily add into your container gardening routine.

Top tip 1: Steer clear of peat

The most eco-conscious gardeners all have one thing in common; they swerve compost that contains peat. The problem with peat stems from where it’s extracted from, acres-upon-acres of peat bogs that have gone on to be drained and destroyed for compost generation. As a result, peatland is reportedly one of the UK’s most threatened habitats, with pressure mounting on the Government to ban peat-based products by the day.

The good news is that peat-free compost alternatives are available. And the even better news is that certain potting mixes, such as the LECHUZA-PON Mineral Potting Mix are not just peat-free. They contain high quality mineral stones that are free from contamination and pollutants, providing a permanently structurally-stable environment with optimum aeration for true plant perfection.

Top tip 2: Consider your pest control

While many pest control products may have been traditionally manufactured using hazardous chemicals over the years, these products are being increasingly phased out in favour of solutions that have been specifically developed to be kinder to the planet.

Despite being widely used for numerous years, chemical pest control methods have been linked to causing health problems, as well as causing soil, water and air contamination capable of harming local ecosystems and reducing biodiversity.

But that was then…these days, chemical-free pest control is booming, with popular solutions ranging from using netting and sticky traps to keep insects at bay, to strategically positioning bait stations to attract slugs and snails before they strike. Here at LECHUZA, we’re a huge fan of companion planting – planting certain herbs and plants side-by-side can work wonders! For example, popping garlic and chives under roses helps keep aphids and black spot at bay. Meanwhile, growing nasturtiums amongst your vegetables attracts aphids that repel ants and whitefly.

Top tip 3: Stick to eco-friendly planters

Compost and pest control has evolved over the years, and so too have planters. Take the LECHUZA CLASSICO Color ECO range, for instance. Not only are all of the pots within this range (six different sizes in total) incorporate a visual water level indicator to prevent overwatering, they are made from fully recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable.

What’s more, they’re made to last. They are shatterproof and UV resistant and can be used both indoors and outdoors, providing you with an ideal planet-friendly pot solution you can enjoy looking at and using for many years to come.

Top tip 4: Water your plants wisely

All plants, whether they are in the ground or in pots need plenty of water to grow and thrive, particularly during those hot summer months. And when the mercury rises, some gardeners may find themselves watering their plants around-the-clock, using up precious water supplies in the process.

Sound familiar? If so, then you may want to invest in a self-watering planter, which are available in all sorts of different shapes, sizes, patterns and colours (take a look at our range and you’ll soon see the wealth of options available to you). Self-watering pots are designed to store water in the reservoir in the bottom, which is optimally absorbed by the plant, saving valuable time and valuable water in the process.
